This blog’s namesake comes from St. Augustine’s famous conversion story. Upon his struggle to forsake all and follow Christ, Augustine heard children chanting the phrase “Take up and read!” Augustine rose, picked up a copy of St. Paul’s epistle to the Romans and read:
Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. –Romans 13:13-14
Augustine is a very popular Christian figure, but his skill at numerous distinct disciplines is the reason this blog references his life. Augustine is a noted philosopher, theologian, historian, and rhetorician. These disciplines are among the ones the authors of this blog seek to study for the rest of our lives.
